3D Scanning and CAD Drawing Development

On-Site Measurements in Theaters

Theaters are highly complex buildings, packed with technical equipment. Many theaters are very old and have undergone multiple renovations and expansions over the years. Installed systems often originate from different decades, ranging from very old to brand new. Documentation is often incomplete, and usable drawings may not exist. Before any renovations or modernizations can take place, precise on-site measurements and the preparation of base plans are essential.

Technology – 3D Laser Scanning

Anyone who has tried to measure a room and produce an accurate plan knows that errors can quickly accumulate, and the plan may only approximate reality. Certain areas may be difficult to access, requiring assumptions. Complex geometries or long distances can easily exceed the limits of traditional measurement methods. Accurate surveying is therefore the work of specialists.

We utilize a technology that has been available for several years but has become increasingly affordable threedimensional laser scanning. Specialized laser scanners capture the surfaces within a space, creating a detailed digital representation of the scanned environment.

The output is a point cloud, a spherical capture in grayscale, similar to a black-and-white image. Often, multiple point clouds are required per room to avoid shadowing caused by structural features or equipment.

Creating CAD Drawings and 3D Models

With software, the exact position of each point in the cloud can be determined. Distances between points or the precise location of a specific component can be measured accurately. We use CAD software that integrates directly with point cloud data, enabling fully dimensionally accurate planning in a virtual 3D environment. This approach provides several advantages:

  • Typically, a single measurement session is sufficient, instead of multiple visits
  • Planning can be conducted at the desk as if we were on site
  • Measurements can be obtained even in areas that are otherwise difficult to access
  • Extremely high accuracy of ±2 mm
  • Both planning and subsequent fabrication and installation proceed smoothly and precisely

Additionally, point clouds can be used to generate 2D or 3D drawings, which are not only valuable for construction planning but can also be used by theater operators afterward. A 3D-captured stage, including side stages, working galleries up to the fly tower, or even under-stage areas, can significantly assist in planning future productions.
