Variable auditorium concept – flexible stage area
The Schaubühne Berlin is located in the heart of the city. It is a theatre with an extremely flexible auditorium concept. The stage area can be freely adjusted within the three available auditoriums. Our office was able to continuously manage refurbishment measures for the stage machinery, helping the theatre maintain long-term usability and high availability of its stage technology.

Complete refurbishment
In 2007, Theater Engineering renewed the entire stage machinery of the Schaubühne at Lehniner Platz. The Schaubühne is a theatre with an extremely flexible auditorium concept. The stage area can be freely adjusted within the three available auditoriums.
Variable spatial arrangement through flexible auditorium machinery
For this performance concept, a correspondingly flexible system had to be designed. The existing point hoists were no longer safe and needed to be replaced. TE developed an adapted point hoist concept taking into account the existing room geometry. This allows the use of load points at any position within the auditorium. The existing machine rooms could continue to be used.
In total, 100 + 14 (later retrofitted) point hoist drives with the associated stage control system were installed. The control system takes into account the different variants of auditorium usage with regard to overarching functions, such as the emergency exit system.
The planning had to be completed within a tight schedule. The construction work was completed on time within an installation period of three months.
Specialist planning for the refurbishment of the stage control system
The Schaubühne Berlin relies heavily on a reliable stage control system. Due to the multifunctional auditorium concept of this theatre, all conceivable room configurations are realized through the lower and upper stage machinery. The objective for the refurbishment of the control system was therefore clear: a reliable stage control system that supports the implementation of the multifunctional auditorium concept in both setup and operation.
For this requirement, we were able to develop a precise planning and scope of services in a short period of time, based on detailed consultations with the user, comprehensive measurements, and our prior experience.
As a result, the refurbishment of the stage control system was completed within the specified time and cost framework during an extended performance break.
